Extended Scrolling: August 18, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
Love everything about Eminem asking The D.O.C. about his flow. The reverence for the song on Em’s part, the joy on DOC’s face to hear Em rapping his song…just awesome. Looks like this comes from a D.O.C. documentary?
Speaking of joy, check out how proud Metallica’s James Hetfield is of himself when he nails this rhythm part to “The Day That Never Comes.”
Extended Play favorite Sufjan Stevens announced a new album dropping October 6. The first single, “So You are Tired,” is streaming now.

New old jazz discovery: Pitchfork went back and reviewed Keith Jarrett’s “Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne” recently. Two hours of improvised solo piano performances? Yes, please.
The only positive thing to come out of Melle Mel’s Eminem diss track is this compilation of YouTube reactors reacting to it.
We’d love to see more of this kind of stuff: a playlist of music left behind in writer James Baldwin’s house in France when he passed away in 1987. Not necessarily our favorite kind of music, but what incredible insight into the life of one of America’s greatest thinkers. [via kottke.org]
Great Instagram account to follow: jazzandcoffee. On point with the jazz recommendations.
Episode Throwbacks:
Apple Music finally rolled out a discovery station that recommends songs based on what you already listen to (akin to Spotify’s “Discover Weekly”). If you have Apple Music, we’d love to know if you’ve tried it and what you think of it.
Also:
In case you’re wondering if Steven Seagal ever recorded a dancehall song, complete with fake Jamaican accent and lyrics such as “Me want the punani,” well, wonder no more.
