Extended Scrolling: December 22, 2023
Yo, Extended Family! E here to let you know that the newsletter will be taking a little holiday break starting next week. But in the meantime here’s another list of ten-ish things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast. NOTE: Don’t miss E’s and Tank’s lists of their favorite albums of 2023 at the bottom of the list! Okay, here we go:
Music:
How “Chop Suey” sounds to people who don’t like System of a Down.
Michael McDonald might win for the best memoir title of all time. Co-written by Paul Reiser. Because of course.
Does Jason Isbell listen to The Extended Play Podcast? Because this Bon Iver cover (in falsetto!) is directly in our wheelhouse.
Apparently I need to be more active on the Extended Play TikTok. “[Shoegaze] has seen a 50% year-over-year increase in streams from November 2022 to 2023, with daily searches for ‘shoegaze’ increasing over 220% globally in that same period.”
More shoegaze! (Hey, it’s my newsletter! When Tank writes it, expect 300% more Metallica.)
Update: full live performance of Ed Sheeran performing with The Darkness is now up. Just a great fucking song. And Sheeran seems like an authentically cool guy.
We rarely talk about singles we like, but I’ve listened to Teenage Wrist’s “Still Love” (featuring Softcult) about 1,000 times this year.
From the Episodes:
More year-end “best of” lists. Find great stuff you missed! Get angry! Whatever! [From this week’s episode - “2023.”)
NPR Listeners’ Favorite Albums of 2023. (You’ll notice it’s MUCH more reasonable than the list we discuss in this week's episode.)
“10 Takeaways from the 2024 Grammy Nominations.” (From this week’s episode - “2023.”)
Steph (the artist formerly known as Mrs. E) loved this Billie Eilish performance of one of her favorite Christmas songs. (From our “Holidays” episode.)
Fallon actually has good musical guests once in a while! This week Rufus and Martha Wainwright performed a cover of a Sufjan Stevens Christmas song: “Justice Delivers Its Death.” (Also from our “Holidays” episode.)
According to Pitchfork, Rufus Wainwright performed this song with Sufjan himself five years ago - the last time Sufjan played live. 😥
