Extended Scrolling: September 1, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
It’s It was Bandcamp Friday! Ninety-three percent of the money you spend on music or merch via Bandcamp goes directly to the artist. A few recommendations from E’s recent purchases:
“Let the Moon Be a Planet” by Steve Gunn and David Moore (listen / buy at Bandcamp)
“Still Blooms” by Church Girls (listen / buy at Bandcamp)
“High Line” by SUSS (listen / buy at Bandcamp)
Ask for a cover song from The Hives with great caution.
Pod favorite Rick Beato took a close look at the current Top 10 songs according to Spotify streams. Yikes.
Worried about the impact AI is having on the music world? Brian Eno advocates for leaving those little mistakes in so as to “not homogenize the whole song.” (E was listening to the opening drums in “Gold Lion” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and wouldn’t trade the irregular drum sound in the intro for anything.)

E grabbed this great Thad Jones album from Third Man Records in Detroit over the weekend. Grateful that Third Man is giving Detroit jazz artists like Jones and Roy Brooks some long-overdue love.
Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age was on Neal Brennan’s “Blocks” podcast a couple of months ago. Brennan’s guests (like Brennan himself) are usually pretty introspective (it’s kind of the point of the podcast), but Homme was particularly vulnerable. Highly recommended.
Insight into how Daniel Fang of Turnstile approaches the drums. Fascinating stuff.
