Extended Scrolling: September 8, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
We’re starting to feel like we cursed the entire country genre, including the good guys.
Spotify might be testing out making you pay to read song lyrics. Ugh.
A defense for recording concerts with your phone. It’s shockingly convincing, but that doesn’t mean we still don’t hate it.
New vinyl E picked up this week: the new Slowdive and Sigur Ros albums.
Once again, another dynamite edition of Amoeba Music’s “What’s in My Bag?” series, this one featuring Beach Fossils (whose latest album is really great BTW).
Another great series: Mass Appeal’s “Rhythm Roulette,” in which DJs pick out records while blindfolded and have to make a beat using only those records. Damn these dudes are talented.
Last week the people behind Lofi Girl released a new compilation in their chillwave/synthwave series. Great music to write newsletters to.
E really likes this Sister Hazel song he totally forgot about for the past 20 years until this week. The harmonies between the lead singer and Emily of the Indigo Girls are killer. The music video is SO late-90s/early-00s, complete with frosted tips, eyeliner, and bizarre cameos.
Episode Flashbacks:
Speaking of country, we rebroadcasted part one of our episode on country music today. Check it out if you haven’t already, or listen againto the glory that is Tank’s debut single.
Background on the sad, too-short life of Nick Drake. (“Pink Moon” was featured in our “Colors” Playlist Challenge.)
