Extended Scrolling: September 15, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
Jam of the week: “Rest” by ANOHNI and the Johnsons. Not as into the new album as most critics seem to be, but this track slaps.
Just a reminder that Living Colour was/is awesome and underappreciated.
E watched an old BBC documentary on Britpop, which is pretty much a blind spot for both of our hosts. Heavily focused on Suede and Elastica, but still super informative and entertaining. The notion of a style of music intentionally reflecting the culture of a nation is fascinating, especially when it’s a culture not so heavily linked with racism.
Listened to Elastica’s debut (see above) for the first time ever. Holy shit, how did we miss this?
Great music to fall asleep to: Omoide by Flat Lake. Flat Lake is one of the multiple pseudonyms for Kazuma Okabayashi, who was E’s most listened-to artist on Spotify last year.
Pod favorite Tyler Childers released a new album last week. I“In Your Love” has got to be a favorite for best wedding song of 2023.
Mitski’s gearing up for a new album release. Really digging “Bug Like an Angel” and this behind-the-scenes video about the creation of the song.
Episode Throwbacks:
How would you describe Khruangbin’s music? [From our “Seasons” Playlist Challenge in our first country episode. (Spotify/YouTube)]
Olivia Rodrigo’s new album is being released with four vinyl variants, each featuring a different bonus track. Right now, it’s the only place you can listen to the songs. (See our episode “B.”)
(Bonus - her infomercial-style promo video from last week features a voiceover by Detroit newscasting legend Mort Crim, previously featured on the White Stripes’ “Little Acorns.”)
Throwback to when E and his buddy stumbled upon a livestream of boygenius’s “the film” after a night of playing Dungeons & Dragons and watching soccer highlights. (Another phenomenon mentioned in our episode “B.”)
That’s it for this week.
