Extended Scrolling: September 22, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! SO much new music lately! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
The National released a surprise companion album to April’s “First Two Pages of Frankenstein.” It’s called “Laugh Track,” and on the first couple of listens, it’s got way more pop hooks than “Frankenstein,” which is a good thing.
Shadowlands, a cool collaboration between trumpeter John Raymond and S. Carey, dropped on Friday. Check out the single “Calling” to get the vibe of the record.
James Blake in conversation with Brian Eno. Apparently Eno once accused Blake of using the “asshole chord.” Awkward. E’s been listening to Blake’s new album “Playing Robots Into Heaven.”
Jameela Jamil - James Blake’s partner - was recently on Neal Brennan’s “Blocks” podcast. They’ve both been very open about their mental health challenges, which we’re here for.
Get well soon Sufjan Stevens.
To celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album, CHVRCHES broke down each song on “The Bones of What You Believe.” Wish every band would do this.
The new Explosions in the Sky record arrived at E’s house. Definitely a little mellower an more piano-centric than their previous stuff, but still great. Both E and Tank (along with Mrs. E) are seeing them live next week. Report forthcoming.
Check out this full concert from a few years back to get a taste of what they’re like live. The light show is always on point.
For jazz fans, the latest collaboration between Blue Note Records and Jack White’s Third Man Records by Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet comes out this Friday. The last one was great.
In defense of dumb rock. There’s a time and a place for everything, right?
Speaking of The Darkness, Justin Hawkins’s podcast is pretty fun. The enthusiasm he expresses during video reviews is contagious.
From the Episodes:
Mr. Mef breaks down some of the inspiration for his classic song “Method Man.” Way more intricate in its composition than we even thought.
Don’t forget to check out the show notes of each episode to access our playlists and other fun stuff. Songs featured in “Hip-Hop (Part One)” is available now to soundtrack your weekend (Spotify/YouTube).
