Extended Scrolling: October 6, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
The new Sufjan Stevens record comes out today. The three singles he’s released so far have been fantastic.
Pod favorites boygenius (Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus) announced a new EP coming out on October 13. Their music is great, but their friendship is just as entertaining. Watch their interview with Nardwuar, their Over/Under for Pitchfork, and their video for “Not Strong Enough” to put a smile on your face.
Bonus: check out their cover of The Chicks’ “Cowboy Take Me Away.” (We’re suckers for a mandolin here at Extended Play.)
Bonus bonus: the boys performed “Cool About It” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week.
Okay, so the algorithms were close on this recommendation, but WTAF is this guy doing playing a DJ set ON CASETTE?!
A new episode of Song Exploder - one of E’s favorite podcasts - came out yesterday. This one is all about the Alvvays song “Archie, Marry Me” (though E wishes it was about something off of “Blue Rev”).
AI is alternately terrifying and hilarious. Check out this extremely short AI-created version of “Royals” by Lorde. 🤣
From the Episodes:
Major Mandela effect moment for host E, who could swear that The Cure’s “Fascination Street” soundtracked a sweaty dance scene from some random 80s movie. When he took to Reddit to investigate, the only thing that came up was this clip from some bonkers movie called “Lost Angels,” starring Ad Rock from the Beastie Boys. (From this week’s Playlist Challenge.)
It’s been a while since we’ve talked about Taylor Swift on the show, but Heinz’s introduction of a Taylor-inspired condiment seems reason enough to warrant a newsletter mention. (See our episode on “Popularity.”)
Timely: the “Into It” podcast took a look at how hip-hop seems to be going through a midlife crisis at 50 years old. (From our two-part episode on hip-hop.)
Bonus reading: “50 Years Later, Is There Anything Left of Hip-Hop?”
Speaking of hip-hop, here’s another edition of “old hip-hop head yells at clouds.” Our default is to always agree with Ice-T.
Great date idea. Sounds a lot like what we suggested in our debut episode.
That’s it for this week.
