Extended Scrolling: December 8, 2023
Ahoy Extended Family! It’s E back with another list of ten-ish things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
Reaction videos on YouTube can be pretty hit-or-miss, but I love Justin Hawkins Rides Again (he’s the lead singer of The Darkness). Here’s Hawkins reacting to Megadeth’s drummer hearing “Mr. Brightside” for the first time and laying down a drum beat on it. It almost makes the song tolerable.
He also recently reacted to Post Malone’s cover of “Them Bones” by Alice in Chains. Tell me his enthusiasm and optimism isn’t contagious!
We love lists here at The Extended Play Podcast. More year-end “best albums” lists started rolling out this week. I can see the steam shooting out of Tank’s ears as I type this.
NPR Music’s Best Albums of 2023
Pitchfork’s The 50 Best Albums of 2023
KEXP DJs Top Albums of 2023
Rolling Stone’s The 100 Best Albums of 2023
Gorilla vs Bear’s Albums of 2023
Ted Gioia’s Best Recordings of 2023 (Honorable Mentions)
Two words: “No Purrprises.”
I can personally vouch for four of the albums on this list: “11 Great Shoegaze Albums for Metalheads.”
I went with a friend-of-the-pod to see Deafheaven perform their album “Sunbather” in its entirety for it’s tenth anniversary. Even if you don’t dig them, this list the lead singer gives of albums that influenced “Sunbather” is pretty great.
Before the show, I somehow managed to win at bar bingo. Not bad, eh?
From the Episodes:
Just in time for the holidays, “The Official 2023 Sufjan Yule Log (All of Sufjan's Christmas music).” (From our “Holidays” episode.)
Wait a minute - one of the Guster guys has a side project that made an album called “Hannukah Rocks” in 2005?! And they just did a Tiny Desk Concert that brought Bob Boilen out of retirement?! Where the hell have I been?! (Sort of from our “Holidays” episode.)
Almost as unexpected - Tori Amos covering Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank).” It’s not terrible! (From our “B” episode.)
Your weekly dose of Andre 3000 - “14 Records to Check Out if You Like Andre 3000’s ‘New Blue Sun.’” (From our “Shift” episode.)
That’s it for this week.
