Extended Scrolling: October 27, 2023
Welcome, Extended Family! Sorry for not getting y’all a newsletter last week. Shit be crazy.
Anyway, here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
E’s talked about how he can’t get into singers whose voices are too perfect. Feeling pretty lucky that Nina Simone wasn’t around to hear that.
Throwback time! Apparently you can get Girl Talk’s “Feed the Animals” and “All Day” on vinyl. How the hell did he clear all the samples? If you’re into creative mashups and you’ve never heard this stuff, you’re missing out.
Will Smith launched a new podcast celebrating old school hip-hop called “Class of ‘88.” I mean, I’ll listen, but does anyone else find it difficult to take this dude seriously anymore? 🤚😫
From the Episodes:
Turns out our boy Rick Beato broke down Stone Temple Pilots’ “Vaseline” as well. Also a great fucking song. (From our “Transportation” playlist challenge in Season 3, Episode 6 - “Fidelity.”)
When you do research for the playlist challenge, sometimes you strike gold. Like Cinderella’s commercial for Pat’s Chili Dogs. (Also from our “Transportation” playlist challenge in Season 3, Episode 6 - “Fidelity.”)
E disliked “Last Train Home” so much that he had to check into the whole John Bush/Metallica thing. Turns out he would’ve been a pretty damn good fit. (And another from our “Transportation” playlist challenge in Season 3, Episode 6 - “Fidelity.”)
It makes a lot of sense that musicians place a high value on music discovery, so it was cool to watch Nation of Language talk about why curiosity is important. (From Season 2, Episode 11 - “Discovery.”)
So apparently a cover of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” was an unofficial theme song for the Philadelphia Phillies? (From our “Commands” playlist challenge in Season 2, Episode 10 - “Befuddlement, Part Two.”)
Here’s a cool interview with DJ Shadow in which he talks - amongst other things - about crate-digging. (From our “Anatomy” playlist challenge in Season 3, Episode 4 - “Names.”)
E and Tank were not wrong about hip-hop concerts. (From Season 2, Episode 4 - “Live.”)
That’s it for this week.

See you next week!
