Extended Scrolling: November 10, 2023
Greetings, Extended Family! Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
E’s been listening to the Dissect podcast about Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” which led him down the path to learning about a weird instrument called the Ondes Martenot.
Check out these drum cam videos from Bloc Party’s Louise Bartle. She absolutely rips. For my money, the drums in “Like Eating Glass” are some of E’s favorite of all time.
Here’s a performance of that song on Jools Holland with their original drummer.
Apparently, “Black Metal Without Distortion is Just Surf Rock.” Wild. I’m not familiar with the originals, so I checked them out. Honestly, I prefer the surf rock versions.
Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” came out 50(!) years ago this week. Good time to re-share this insight about the song along. Also, he was/is a weird-looking dude.
E’s daughter and wife are reading the Harry Potter series for the first time, so he’s been re-reading it with them with lovely videos like this providing the soundtrack.
Kind of odd that there are so many reaction videos about a 2009 Beastie Boys video. Though it is a good example of exactly what was cool about them - old-school hip-hop chops and not taking themselves too seriously.
From the Episodes:
After mentioning classical music a bunch of times in this week’s episode, E was inspired to look back at this performance by Sebastian Mullaert & Subchamber Ensmble. It’s a wild blend of electronic and classical, with a bunch of improvisation thrown in. Lovely.
Speaking of classical music, What is Classical Vaporwave? Try to not roll your eyes at the genre name and give it a chance.
This also reminds E of the trend of slowing songs WAY down to create unexpectedly lush and atmospheric soundscapes. The first one I learned about was Justin Bieber’s “U Smile” 800% slower, but my favorite (unsurprisingly) is Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song,” also 800% slower.
That’s it for this week.

See you next week!
