Extended Scrolling: November 17, 2023
Greetings, Extended Family! E here. Here are a ten things that we're digging this week at The Extended Play Podcast:
Music:
Picked up the new Hotline TNT record at Third Man Records after Tank met the lead singer of Metallica. Instantly one of my favorite albums of the year. Not for nothing, it came with a lyric sheet, fold-out newsprint poster, and a ‘zine. Pretty sweet.
Listening to the new Beirut as I write this week’s newsletter. I like it way more than I thought I would. Acquired taste for sure, but I dig it.
A version of Van Halen - Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Joe Satriani - is going on tour, and I’m here for it. They were on Howard Stern recently and talked about the hardest EVH riff that Satriani had to learn. The riff is nuts, but hearing them play the intro of “5150” blew me (and Sammy) away.
I bet there are dozens of artists who record albums of mellow, instrumental acoustic guitar that I would find boring, but for some reason I dig Hayden Pedigo. He was just on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert and it’s great.
Just remembered that William Tyler is another good one. I only own his collaboration with Marisa Anderson called “Lost Futures,” but it’s pretty solid. Pro tip: skip the track “ Something Will Come” unless you want to have a seizure.
This is a weird one to share, but I’ve never been able to figure out Thelonius Monk. This article helped. Verdict? Turns out I just don’t like it. 😥
From the Episodes:
If you can get past Zane Lowe’s douchebaggery (and trust me, it’s not easy), this video of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich walking through their 72 Seasons Tour stage setup is pretty cool. (From this week’s episode, “Experiences.”)
Way back in Season 1, we mentioned a highly entertaining supercut of Paul Stanley’s stage banter. Still worth a listen. (From our “Live” episode.)
On a related note, David Lee Roth’s isolated vocals from “Running with the Devil” are INCREDIBLE.
While Radiohead remains one of my favorite bands, the new song/video by The Smile does nothing for me. What am I missing? (From our “B” episode, I think.)
That’s it for this week.

See you next week!
